When Lightning Strikes: What to do Before, During and After an Electrical Storm

Jan 19, 2012 (0) comment

The Bay Area is known for its spectacular electrical storms. Bay Area insurance for the home will generally cover you for damage to your property caused by lightning strike or subsequent fire. To help minimize damage however, there are a few steps that you might take.

On Approach – Once you hear a major storm is approaching, it’s wise to move your car into a garage or undercover. Move any outdoor furniture or loose items in the yard inside, or tie them down to secure them. Switch off and unplug computers and electrical equipment.

During the Storm – Stay indoors if possible, and away from windows. Ensure all family members – and pets – are also inside. Avoid using the telephone or computer.

After the Storm – Inspect your home. In the event of any damage, quickly photograph the scene before making temporary repairs only if necessary for safety. Where the damage poses a significant risk (live wires for example), it is best to phone emergency services.

Do contact your Bay Area insurance agent as soon as possible. They’ll be able to take you through the claim process step by step so you know just what details you’ll need to provide. It is also wise to check your current policy now so that you know just what you are covered for.
